Prince Snow Farm

My 500th Post...and a giveaway

Well, it is officially my last day of summer vacation. We ended school late due to blizzards and hurricanes, and we are starting early to prevent us from ever ending that late we had a bit of a short summer. But short as it was, it was still exciting and busy: gardening, the kids going to swim and golf, Stormy's illness. We didn't go on any vacations this summer, but we truly enjoyed just being home. The kids played outside almost every day. We grilled and
watched a few movies or played games, baked cookies, picked flowers.....

And of course I have been busy with what I like to call "Operation Reclaim Your House".  I have been cleaning closets, donating, yard saling, and Ebaying. We will be changing our playroom back to a dining room, but boy has it been a lot of work so far.  I look forward to the painting stage, and I am sure I will be asking you all to weigh in on color choices! We also want to paint our bedroom and N's bedroom. We will see what actually comes to fruition.

This is a tricky time of year, (here I go again), because life goes from busy to crazy in 60 seconds. It's also an emotional time of year. It's hard to leave the kids, hard to leave Stormy after she has been so sick. I mourn the odd things like shade raising, dewy green wellies and coffee while blog reading. I will miss the cicadas buzz and the catbird following me to the garden. September blurs by and brings us the glow of October; a slower pace, the thrill of harvesting pumpkins and visiting the apple orchards.

And now, here I am writing my 500th post!
I never dreamed 5 years ago that I would still be blogging.
I started blogging because I was reading a lot of fashion blogs.
Hmmm, I thought...I can do this.

But as time progressed, so did my subject matter, my writing, my photography, my life.

This blog has evolved into an extension of me.

It's about my family, my home, my garden.

It's about things that make me smile....but I am also realistic, and have come to share the sad or upsetting moments of my life as well. That is mainly due to the comfort I feel knowing I am surrounded by people who truly understand.
Thanks so much for making this blog a place I know I can go ANYTIME and I will feel a breath of fresh air surging through my lungs. I know I can write or tell a story, or share a moment, and you will listen, perhaps comment, and understand.

Of course, I couldn't let my 500th post go by without a giveaway!

I wanted it to be things that represent me and my blog.
So I am giving away:

5 packs of zinnias (packed for sow them!)
2 round vintage bird embroideries
1 vintage afghan

To enter:

Leave me a comment telling me your favorite summer moment.
You must be a follower of my blog, or follow with google+ (see side bar)

I will draw a winner on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 12noon eastern.

Good Luck!

And I will leave you with one final tip:

Bring in those herbs as the weather grows colder....line up the jars on your windowsill, and enjoy watching the herbs take root. A perfect kitchen herb garden.

Happy 500th post my friends!

  1. 500 posts - 5 years - Congratulations!

Like you, we did not go away- simply enjoyed being home, on the beach, in the garden. Our saddest moment was losing our beloved dog, a happy moment was getting our sweet Lulu.

Hands down, my best summer moment - waking each morning and realizing that this is my life, for the rest of my life and I love it.

  2. I really enjoy your posts on IG and what a beautiful blog you have! My favorite summer memories are jumping in the swimming hole with the kids and getting together with my Mom canning up the summers bounty!

  3. Always, always a delight, visiting your blog. For all those times I don't thank you , Here is a big one. Thank-you and God bless. Here's to the next 500! Love the quilt in the photo of your kids playing a game.

My favorite summer memories consist of moments in my garden with my family! They've helped me pick a lot of beans and they don't know it yet, but someday they will look fondly to those groaning hours of 'are we nearly finished?!'

  4. Hey Monica! 500 posts! Wow! I really enjoyed the pictures in your post today ~ especially the pictures of your family and your dog (who is probably family too!) I hope that your school year starts off well. I would love to be in your giveaway!

The afghan is beautiful! I have never crocheted, although I can do rudimentary knitting. After more than thirty years of not knitting, I am making a scarf for a blog friend's breast cancer scarf project. My favorite times this summer were with my husband's and my family. My proudest moment was standing up paddle boarding at Waikiki. That happened before a stint in the hospital for me, so I am very grateful that I'm back to 100%! Have a good one!

  5. Congratulations!!! While I haven't been a follower for very long, I am enjoying learning about you & yours~

My favorite summer memory is from childhood when the neighbor girls & I would build a clothesline tent & in our little homemade home, we would play with paperdolls & consume mass amounts of koolaid & pb &j sandwiches. Come evening, we would grab a jar & go on firefly hunts~

  6. I returned to look at your zinnias in a jar. I like that idea to # the tables at my daughter's wedding.

  7. Back to school time. :) A couple of years ago when I was teaching in Oklahoma, we had 13 snow days. That's extremely unusual. Our school district extended the school days by 20 minutes in case it ever happened again. Of course it won't but it gave us more instructional time.

Congratulations on your 500th post! I've really enjoyed your blog since finding you.

  8. Congratulations on your 500th post! I love reading your blog. Blogging is such a great way to unite like-minded people. I am also happy to see your pup resting. I am going to pass on the giveaway because of our upcoming move. I will wish the future winner good's to another 500 posts.

  9. My favorite summer moment was always coming back to KY to visit my grandparents and stay at their farm. My dad had joined the Air Force and we live in North Dakota for many years. I always wanted to live here on a farm and now I do! Good luck getting back into the school routine. It has been a bit hectic for us!

  10. M, 500! That is really fantastic.
I've only been at it three and a
half years. I know what you mean
by starting out one way, then finding
your true "voice" and what you are
    happy writing about.

    My favorite summer moment was
visiting our local drive-in with my
little family of four (plus Gracie, our
dog!) to get milkshakes. I know I
sound like a simpleton, but savoring
that time together, the windows rolled
    down, the was bliss.
Especially because we knew it would
be the last time it would be like this,
since my daughter was leaving for
college. We just got back from that
life event and the memory I just described
is that much sweeter. Thanks for the
prompt that made me remember it.

Lovely giveaway from a lovely blogger.

    xo Suzanne

  11. Congratulations on 5 years! I hope this school year is great.

  12. *C*O*N*G*R*A*T*U*L*A*T*I*O*N*S*!* on 5 years! I must be yappy, as I've one 527 posts in 3 years. LOL! I hit the button to add you to my Google+ circle, but it didn't seem to work. Your kids are adorable. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  13. I really enjoy your blog! I follow you on Instagram and find you so refreshing and your daily photos and daily updates are always fascinating. ~ my favorite summer memory this year is our San Diego trip. Living in Nv we don't have the luxury of going to the beach obviously we live in the desert. I was born in Ca and relocated in Nv with my grandparents in 1986 been here ever since. I have to say the trip was a short 2 day trip to meet up with a friend from South Carolina. The moment we arrived we headed to the beach. I have to tell you my feet didn't touch ground as I ran as fast as I could to touch the ocean and feel the sand between my toes. As the air touched my face and salty spray of the ocean touched my body I could feel the moisture and at that moment I knew I was home! Cheesy but the best 2 days of summer. I'm so happy to be a part of your 500th post! You're an amazing inspiration and I will continue to follow you on your journey. Sheila aka sheilashe72 on Instagram

  14. Congratulaions on your 500th post! My favorite summer moment...too hard to choose just one!!! Roses blooming in the backyard, friends over for bbq, going to the river with the grandkids, Disneyland, the youngest granddaughters playing in the oldest grandkids backyard pool, I could go on and on and on!

  15. My favorite summer memories are always the family beach trip. We go with our parents, sisters and spouses, children and grandchildren - just the 21 of us. It's chaotic, wild and the most fun week of the year! Happy 500th!!

  16. I haven't followed you too long, but I have loved every visit. You have such a knack for putting words and pictures together.
This was a hard summer for there aren't many special moments. I would have to say that the closeness of family and friends, when I needed them, is something I'll never forget.
    Here's to the next 500...
    Balisha ((HUGS))

  17. Happy 500th!

My favorite summer moment was when my dear friend Susan at From Beyond My Kitchen Window visited with us in Maine for a few days in August.

Now, it's back to work in MA!

  18. well done on your 500th post, your blog is a joy to read.
My favourite summer moments are on Sunday afternoons, the three of us have a small barbecue in the garden. We sit and chat, listen to our favourite music and cook lovely food.
Thank you for offering us this very kind giveaway.
Good wishes for the next 500 posts.

  21. Ahhhh your garden!! Just breath taking! Love every photo of yours!!

  22. I love zinnias - the last couple of summers the weather has been so poor that my zinnias didn't thrive at all but this year they have been wonderful!
My favourite summer moment was our family holiday to Cornwall - the blue skies and sea!

  23. Good morning dear heart! I am back to teacher meetings every morning this week, and how you have found time to blog, I DON'T KNOW! But I am here, at 3:30am trying to catch up with all of you, those bloggers that I admire and enjoy so much. It was a fantastic summer, it will be a great school year (we start next week) and bring on the COOLER TEMPS NOW! We have had 100+ all this week..unusual for Minnesota at this time!

  27. Wow! 500 posts, congratulations! Your blog is absolutely's pure eye candy!
My favorite part of summer, is the feeling of freedom and relaxation. No particular routine or schedule to follow, no real deadlines. Ahh
I love to just go with the flow with the kids. I love to go outside in the early morning and check the gardens. Love to wake up and see the blooming flowers.
Love to sit out around a campfire. Love the promise of Fall that follows!
Thanks for the chance to win your great giveaway!

  28. Warm congratulations! Here's to the next 500! A happy summer moment for me - is when the frogs return to our little pond. One day, there they are, sitting like picture-book cuties on water lily leaves. If you're quiet and gentle enough, you can pet them. Happy and safe Labor Day weekend!

  29. oh well, poop, I missed the deadline... I had a date with a push mower... not EXACTLY my fave summer memory, but it is a memory... it was my Dad's push mower, and it used to be red- that is how it is in my memory- but some one spray painted it yellow... an old memory is the year my parents planted red Canna lillies and we were visited by a humming bird.. big excitement. Love your photos and I just learned this year that zinnias are a fave of butterflies.
