Winds Picking Up :Update

Update 10/30:  Things are ok here, but we still have warnings in effect. We are expecting a heavy band of rainy which is expected to bring heavy winds. Keep you posted.
ALERT 1 - Coastal Flood Warning
Event Start: In Progress
Event End: Tuesday, October 30, 2012 1:00 PM EDT
ALERT 2 - Wind Advisory
Event Start: In Progress
Event End: Tuesday, October 30, 2012 7:00 PM EDT

Winds here around 3pm are hovering near 40-45 mph with gusts to 60. The next 3 hours are supposed to be the worst. We have lost a few branches, and our greenhouse which was anchored securely has blown away!

Sandy is climbing up the coast....a very unpredictable storm....a hurricane....a nor'easter...a "Frankenstorm". We still are not sure what to expect here in southern New England. We are prepared. We are on high ground in our little coastal fact, we may be the highest in town.

Stay safe all.

Stranded at the drive-in
Branded a fool
What will they say Monday at school?

Sandy can't you see I'm in misery
We made a start now were apart
There's nothing left for me
Love has flown all alone
I sit and wonder why-yi-yi-yi
Why, you left me oh Sandy

Oh Sandy baby someday when high-yi school is done
Somehow, someway, our two worlds will be one
In heaven, forever and ever we will be
Oh please say you'll stay oh Sandy

Sandy my darling you hurt me real bad
You know it's true but baby you gotta believe me
When I say I'm helpless without you
Love has flown all alone
I sit, I wonder why-yi-yi-yi
Why, you left me oh Sandy

Sandy, Sandy, why-yi-yi-yi-yi
Oh Sandy

Still remember going to Grease with my friend Jo Mary Pontes. The theatre was sold out and we had to sit in separate rows! Has always been a favorite!

Fridays with Edna and Eva - War Cake

I am going to start sharing a recipe from my grandmother's recipe box each Friday. There are also recipes mixed in from my great-grandmother. Many of these are from the 40's and 50's.  I will just post the recipe cards....interpret as you see fit :)

....and if you try any...please share!

Sunday Morning

I took an early morning walk....44 wind...peaceful as it comes.....

Autumn has finally decided to visit our little street.....

The piles of leaves are almost big enough to jump in......but we will wait another week, until the maples drop their bounty, then we will rake our makeshift mountain and jump with glee....

Even the vines are vibrant show offs....

The lavender (foreground) rests peacefully, the vegetable garden (beyond) still
is in the process of clean up.

Our stonewall in all its glory...

A few Halloween cut-outs on steamy morning windows...

Our inspiration for "Prince Snow Farm"

Street view heading home...

Street view heading out....

The sun finally above the horizon enough to cast memorable shadows....

C joins me, and takes a few shots from an 8 year old's perspective, and I absolutely love it.....

Walking home....

Good Morning to all.

October Shadows

Took a walk around yesterday...the change is slow to come to many of our trees that usually
are a blend of orange and red at this time....

The grass is lush and green...denying the change of seasons as it pretends it is springtime...

The skies were so blue today....not a cloud in site,
a vast robin's egg canvas...full of dreams and wishes...

The maples cast their shadows long and deep....a scatter of leaves add a decorative touch...

The majestic maples hold tight to their green...willing us a hope for a late fall show....

The grasses and herbs lend life to a barren garden....promising life....

A touch of deep red-orange teases us....

I get lost in the shadows of the woods....a canopy from fall's sunshine,
a place to pause and reflect....

Clean Up

Looking above at my header, you probably wouldn't even know this was the same garden. I love planting and tending the spring and summer garden. I despise tearing out the dead / decaying garden of autumn.  It's a ritual. I'll say that much for it. But I'm not so sure it's an enjoyable one.

It's like saying good-bye to a friend. It's like mourning someone you just got to know. and like. and don't want to let go of.

There is still life in the garden, but it is fleeting. Pumpkin vines hanging on by a thread, much like the last stream of purple in a sunset sky. Tomatoes that want to keep producing, but the bees are no longer available to pollinate.

The butterflies are still abundant...sucking the last bits of life from the zinnias....building up their store of energy as they prepare for migration. Wish I could follow....flying high above the Earth....surrounded by blue sky and tailwinds....

I fight the color change, because as much as I delight in the jewel tones, I walk through the yard in flip flops that I'm not yet ready to surrender....

Soon this view will be covered in winter snow...the joyful chatter of sledders, the shrieks of joy as they plummet down the slippery chocolate brewing inside for cold little hands....and to warm a mama's heart....

Contrails streak the autumn sky...jets flying in from Europe, carrying a new life for some, and perhaps a new look on an old life for others....

Reach for the stars......

Dream a little dream.
