Help Me Lose 10 Pounds...Please!

Happy Sunday Fellow Bloggers. I need to ask for your help. I need to lose 10 pounds. Now. Well, actually for the past 2 months. Summer gives me such a laid back feel that I tend to pack on an extra few. My clothes are a bit snug. I've always been lucky with my weight. Growing up I was the shortest (yep, first in line), and the tiniest. Really tiny. Then in high school I grew a foot in one year! Awkward to say the least. I remained thin until kids. I'm 5'7" and I was 121 (heaviest I'd ever been) at my wedding 13 years ago. I was actually back to that weight last summer, but this year I have crossed the 130 mark and I am horrified. I am very small-boned, and low to mid 120's is perfect for me. BUT I CAN'T GET BACK UNDER 130 pounds. So help! I want all of your advice. Every bit of it.

Some background:
5'7"
133 pounds
Age 43

Work full time.(teacher)

Two kids and a hubby at home.

Not a heck of a lot of free time (I dedicate that to laundry, dishes, the usual!)

Try to squeeze in an exercise tape here and there.

Carnation breakfast for breakfast.
Salad or a small sandwich for lunch.
Starving when I get home..usually grab the cheez-its.
Regular dinner.
Seldomly snack after dinner.

Ok ladies(and the occasional gent), HELP!!!

I PROMISE TO MAKE A PLAN USING ALL OF THE ADVICE I GET, TO LET YOU KNOW MY PLAN, AND TO KEEP YOU POSTED ON MY PROGRESS.

  1. Are you nuts? You don't need to loose any weight, at 5'7" that is perfect. You are 43 and not 23 any more. Most women at 43 would die to be that weight. I am 5'7" and weigh 140 and think i look great, and I'm older than you are. :)

  2. I agree that 133 on 5'7' is great, but if you are not *feeling* great, then that's another story. If you feel pretty good then don't fixate on the number.

As far as tips, the number one thing for me is drinking apple cider vinegar. I'm not sure if you saw this post on my blog:

    http://gigisgoneshopping.blogspot.com/2009/06/gigis-weight-loss-incl-acv.html

Some people have gotten upset saying it doesn't work, but overall, fellow bloggers have tried it and seen results. You have to be consistent, drinking it everyday. It's not a magic elixir and my purpose for it is to reduce bloat and curb cravings. When I don't have cravings to fight, I do so much better w/food choices. After 4 months away from the gym, I recently started attending again.

From your diet it sounds like your body might be hanging onto the food you're putting in. If you're feeling starved by the time you eat, your body is more likely to store that, esp with only dinner calories & then a drink for breakfast. You would do better to break things up and eat 5x/day. Sometimes I will have oatmeal and eggwhites. Then a couple hours later have tea & a cookie (healthy, I know) and a few almonds. I eat lunch, usually a wrap of some sort. Almonds & baby carrots in the late afternoon and then an early dinner. I try not to eat too late and sometimes I will even eat dessert 30-60 min before dinner. Then have the ACV with honey before I go to bed.

Finally, throw a couple of 5lbs weights near the TV. If you don't think you'll go to the gym, you could do some arm curls and other simple exercises while watching TV. Remember muscle burns fat.

    Good luck :-)

    Good luck :-)

  3. When I need to lose weight I eat 100 calories every 90 minutes. At first it is hard but it gets easier. I eat things like apples, veggies, tuna on a rice cake, all bran, hummus, almonds etc. I can usually keep this going for about 10 days before I have to eat normally for a little while. I find it much easier to maintain my weight than to lose it :O(

  4. Oh -- I meant to say that I haven't gone to the gym in 4 months and I have been able to keep my weight on the same number the entire time w/ACV and keeping my food more or less in check. I know the ACV has become a crutch and I still need cardio & other fitness in my life, hence my return to the gym.

  5. Well obviously you don't eat that bad, so you are going to have to workout to lose the weight. You have to do cardio atleast a few times a week for 30 mintues to actually lose the weight, otherwise you will just stay at the weight you are now. If you drink soda, stop, cut out all sugar. Drink tons of water. Good luck!

  6. well a french point of you ! i'm 5'4 and 105(most of less)so :
i eat an huge breakfast with cereals ( muesli) and a large piece of baguette with butter ,a large latte with sugar
at lunch : i prepare my lunch box with always protein, vegetables and rice pasta or potatoes ( all home made to control the lipids)
when i get back home i sometimes snack with a slice of bread and cheese(small pice)
diner: soup , or a salad and little protein ( ham , egg or fish)
    dessert: always yogourt and fruits
we don't have any junk food at home , no biscuits, but i LOVE eating
try this : they said french women are skin because they eat well : i don't know if it's true but most of my friends do the same as we do and are slim too so ! I don't want to be presomptuous but it works!

  8. I wish to God I was at that weight.
I just turned 46 on Thursday and I am 5'9" and I weighed that or about when I got married 11 yrs ago. I have not had any children. I gained a bit of weight thought because I have DVT and some of the medication and such cause it to be harder for me to get rid of it.
I walk almost every day with my husband and I go to an exercise facility on the other days.
The only other thing I do is watch what I eat due to the blood clot.

  9. Go onto www.sparkpeople.com and keep a daily journal of what you are putting in your mouth. You will have to buy a scale and weigh your food. You will be very surprised how much a little of this and a little of that adds up to weight gain. I lost 32lbs in a year. I am 5'6", 52 years old and weigh 130. My blood sugar also went crazy during the day so I take a teaspoon of liquid chromium every day. For me, it was the catalyst that got me to 130. You can purchase it at www.health101.com Good luck!!!

  10. I get what you are saying. My ideal weight is on the low side for many people, but it's what feels best on my frame. A few things that pop into mind-- more protein for snacks. Try almonds or a low fat string cheese instead of cheez-its as they will fill you up more. I drank Carnation instant Breakfast when I was pg with twins to help me gain weight quickly, maybe there is something else you could try. Yogurt or kefir with fruit? To really kick start your goal of loosing 10 lbs consider the 30 day shred by Jillian Micheals from the Biggest Loser. Intense (but quick!) workout and you'll see results fast! Good luck and remember to take good care of yourself!!!

  11. You should probably check a calorie counter to see what your optimal caloric intake is to get down to your target weight (they have these online). It's actually advisable to eat more often than you are doing - smaller meals spread out more will help you feel fuller.

Also, I know Gigi trumpets the use of ACV, but you need to be careful with that. I read up about it awhile back, and it can cause some potentially serious health issues.

  13. I'm the same height as you (but 48) and weigh 129/130..., always have. I work from home so I have a late breakfast and then dinner around 7PM, hardly ever snack in between (because I'm actually not hungry)..., or if I do snack I have veggis or fruit (carrots with a bit of cheese, melon or banana). I guess this is not real advice, just thought I share what works for me.

  14. I like to snack on hummus + carrots, or apples with manchego (just a little). Also love fat free plain yogurt (especialy greek style) sprinkled with slivered almonds and dried fruit.

Plain oatmeal with a little soymilk and fresh berries keeps me full in the morning, but I do like to have a small snack between bfest and lunch (I pretty much graze).

Larabars are a great alternative to energy bars/granola bars because they're all natural and have few ingredients-- no extra fake stuff or minerals added. Sometimes, I'll just eat half with my afternoon coffee and save the other half for tomorrow. My favorite is cherry pie-- dried cherries, dates, almonds and that's it!

  15. Wow, these comments are full of great advice, and gigi def takes the cake.

My two cents - eat more protein in your meals (healthy protein like egg whites/beaters, low fat deli meats, greek yogurt, etc) - that keep you full longer than carbs - but you want a nice balance of the two.

For working out, if you are so busy - try doing 3 10 minute spurts of cardio throughout the day - 10 minutes in the morning, a brisk walk over a lunch break or after school, and 10 more minutes after dinner.

Lift weights! Muscle burns tons more calories when your body is resting than fat or anything else, so if you build a little muscle, you could burn more calories - try looking on shape magazine's site for women-friendly options.

Just know - working out more can cause you to be a bit hungrier, so make sure to eat a well balanced meal/snack (of protein, healthy carbs and good fats - Peanut butter, avocado, etc) and spread your calories out through out the day to eat more frequently.

Good luck - and p.s. I am trying this all myself...trying to shed some weight too. So together hopefully we can! :)

  16. Maybe a couple of modifications, but 133 lbs. at 5'7" for a busy mom of two sounds pretty good to me! I'm 5'3" and I have to work hard to stay under 120.

Perhaps snacking on fruits, veggies or some non-fat Greek yogurt in the afternoon would help. My typical afternoon snack is Chobani non-fat plain Greek yogurt with 1/2 cup Fiber One cereal mixed in...protein and fiber! I also keep baby carrots on hand, they give me the crunch of a cracker, but not the fat and calories.

When I was working full-time (teaching) I would "sneak in" exercise. I would go for a run or walk after school a couple of days a week before picking up the kids, I would do leg lifts while blow drying my hair each morning, I kept 5 pound weights in my bedroom and would do a couple of reps before bed...sounds crazy, but it's hard to find time to exercise when you work!

    Good luck, keep us posted!

  17. Best of luck. My best tip is Greek yogurt, as Chasing Davies mentioned above. It has significantly more protein than regular yogurt so it really stays with you. My friend and I are addicted to the Chobai brand, that we get at our local supermarket. It makes a great quick breakfast or afternoon snack. You can get it pre-flavored or go with plain and add honey and/or fruit.
